Wayfinding: Interior ExamplesThe two examples on this page are from the interior of Ralston Hall, an old mansion that is the crown jewel and administration building of Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, CA. They illustrate the importance of strategic placement of a wayfinding sign. Our mantra is "Location, location, location": It doesn't matter how beautiful or well constructed a sign is if it is not placed just right where people need to see it. | STATUS QUO Ralston Hall hosts several weddings every weekend. The bride's room is way in the back of a labyrinth, behind a staircase. On the most stressful day of her life, a bride does not need the additional stress of having to hunt for her dressing room. This is the view as one approaches the destination. |
OUR RECOMMENDATION A simple "Bride's Room" sign makes all the difference. A sign flush on the wall in the same location would do no good. But by sticking out from the wall, this one is perpendicular to her sightline as she approaches. Strategically placed to be visible from far down the hallway, the sign lets her know the location from 100 feet away. |
