This figure illustrates sleep cycles. The original, typical of the standard way of showing sleep cycles, is from the second edition of Introduction to Psychology by James Kalat; my reworking appeared in the third edition. The new version's colors show poorly over the Web, I'm afraid. In print, lighter and darker shades of blue represent lighter and deeper stages of sleep, with stage numbers reversed out of the colors; REM sleep is red.
